Make a Special Gift for Your Child or Grandchild With High Chair Woodworking Plans

Crafting a high chair with diy high chair woodworking plans makes the perfect gift!

When my oldest daughter was pregnant with my first grandchild, there wasn’t much for me to do. She and my wife spent lots of time shopping for new baby clothes. My son-in-law painted the nursery and set the crib up. My younger daughter planned the baby shower and helped think of names for the little one, but I had nothing to do.

One day, I was talking to my neighbor a handyman woodworker, and he showed me some new woodworking tools and hardware he had bought for his workshop. This got me to thinking. I like to work with my hands, so maybe I could undertake a diy woodworking project for the little bundle of joy we were expecting. I started thinking about what my grandchild would need in terms of infant furniture, and I began to think that a do it yourself highchair would be a good idea.

I told my buddy what I was thinking, and he said I could borrow any of his carpentry tools that I needed. He also gave me a some great tips; the one being I should find some good high chair woodworking plans before I started doing anything. He told me to look on the Internet, so that’s what I did. My experience building a high chair for my first grandchild using diy highchair woodworking plans turned out great, and I’d like to share with you a few things I learned along the way.

First, Free High Chair Woodworking Plans are Not Recommended!

Be leery of these free woodworking plans found online!

I spent a few hours one night looking for high chair woodworking plans. I found a lot of free ones out there, but I don’t recommend that you use them. First of all, most of the ones I found were incomplete. Important steps were missing, and some of them didn’t even tell me what tools to use. I needed really good directions because I’m not a professional, and I wanted a quality piece of baby furniture when I finished. I finally found some excellent chair woodworking plans at Ted’s Woodworking. His plans were easy to follow and included lots of pictures, which kept me on track as I was putting the chair together.

Secondly, Remember Safety in Your High Chair Woodworking Plans

Remember safety in your diy babyhigh chair plans!

All high chairs purchased in stores have a safety strap. Don’t forget to add one to your high chair. You must add the safety strap even if it isn’t included in your high chair woodworking plans. The high chair is not finished until you add that safety strap. There are several websites that have safety straps available for purchase, so they aren’t hard to find.

Speaking of safety, be sure to remind the parents-to-be that they should periodically check the chair for loose screws, nuts or bolts. Wood is a little harder to keep clean than plastic because of bacterial issues, so they should also remember to wipe down the chair every time the child uses it.

And Finally, the Right Finish is Just as Important as Good High Chair Woodworking Plans

A good finish will top it off!

Basically, you have two choices when it comes to finishing your wooden high chair. You can use a urethane-based finish, or you can use a natural oil or wax finish. I preferred a natural oil finish, which accentuates the beauty of the wood and is absolutely food-safe. The urethane finish may make it easier to clean the high chair, but I guarantee you will be happier with the results of the oil or wax finish. In my opinion, it looks so much better.

My daughter loved the high chair that I made. I think I might try a rocking horse or cradle next. It would be a great present for the baby’s first birthday! And would you believe it the package of fine woodworking projects from Ted include rocking horse plans, rocking chair plans, baby cradle plans, crib plan, children chair plan and other baby furniture plans.

So I highly recommend; make your own highchair because the using highchair plans from Ted will make this home woodworking project one of complete joy!
